In recent months, clients have increasingly told us that many employees lack foundational knowledge.\u202fAs a communications agency specializing in HR topics, we support our clients in successfully carrying out Total Rewards<\/strong> projects.\u202fAnd in the end, one thing remains true\u2014 We bring people together and foster understanding. <\/span><\/p>

Knowledge is essential for this, also in the field of financial wellbeing<\/strong>. Self-responsibility and self-confidence support us in gaining the knowledge we need. <\/span><\/p>

This is called<\/span> self-efficacy<\/span><\/b>, our topic today.<\/span> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

We are beginning to doubt that the current, deeply caring attitude towards employees is the right way to develop the workforce in our rapidly changing world. Now, companies cannot replace the state or families as educators. This is neither possible nor sensible, but, as Wilhelm Busch said, <\/span>“if you want to get on the right path, you may well have to go through yourself”<\/span><\/b>. What does that mean?\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We cannot retrospectively influence socialization by the family or school in adult employees. But companies can do something – and we call this \u2018self-efficacy\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Numerous studies have shown that self-efficacy has positive effects on the performance, satisfaction, health, and well-being of individuals and groups.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Self-efficacy and personal responsibility<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The American psychologist Albert Bandura coined the term <\/span>self-efficacy<\/span><\/b>, which describes a person’s conviction that they can<\/span> successfully overcome difficult situations and challenges on their own<\/span><\/b>.\u202fBandura identified four sources from which self-efficacy arises:\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  1. Mastery Experiences (a sense of achievement)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  2. Social Modeling (witnessing other people\u2019s accomplishments)\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  3. Social Persuasion (verbal encouragement)<\/span><\/li>
  4. Psychological Responses (emotional regulation)\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ol>

    He developed various methods to measure and promote self-efficacy, for example, through self-observation, goal setting, self-reinforcement, and self-instruction.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    This concept is applied in many areas with great success.\u202fSince it is not purpose-driven, but instead serves to <\/span>empower people<\/span><\/b>, the risk of manipulation is reasonably low. Ultimately, the more important goal is for people to <\/span>take responsibility for their own actions\u2014<\/span><\/b>or to enable them to do so.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0
    <\/span><\/p>

    However, I can only take on responsibility if I am convinced that I can handle it. And I can only do that if I believe in my own abilities and skills. Any unrealistic expectations shatter in the face of everyday life

    The labor market is primarily about the exchange of services for money. And as Unequity deals with topics surrounding Total Rewards systems, it\u2019s a logical focus for our work.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    A few years ago, we took a close look at the topic of <\/span>financial education<\/span><\/b>, focusing on <\/span>financial well-being as a benefits trend<\/span><\/b> (see link at the end of the article).\u202fFortunately, financial well-being is now part of the standard benefits services for some of our customers.\u202fOr let’s be more precise\u2014\u202fWe are talking about<\/span> financial literacy<\/span><\/b>, as a solid basic knowledge of finances that enables us to manage our financial resources responsibly.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    Companies that offer <\/span>employee share ownership, company pension schemes <\/span><\/b>or<\/span> insurance<\/span><\/b> as benefits have a particular interest in ensuring that participants have a basic financial knowledge. However, as companies may not and should not provide personal advice, a <\/span>professional financial education program <\/span><\/b>is ideal for imparting knowledge to help employees make good decisions.\u202f<\/span> Which, in turn, adds to strengthening the employees’ self-efficacy.
    <\/span><\/p>

    According to the OECD, <\/span>financial literacy <\/span><\/b>is “a combination of awareness, knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve individual financial well-being.” This includes a basic understanding of money, its meaning and possible uses, as well as basic knowledge of personal budgeting. The next step deals with the financial sector itself\u2014the banking system, the capital market, and the associated risks and opportunities.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
